Consolidating primary maths and starting algebra properly
Grade 6 maths tying together fractions, ratio, geometry and statistics while introducing formal algebra, negative-number arithmetic and coordinate geometry.
Grade 6 is a bridge, and bridges have to carry weight from both ends. On one side, everything from primary maths has to be secure; on the other, secondary algebra has to be started well. This course does both, with a diagnostic at the start that tells you precisely which earlier topics need repair.
The unit on dividing by a fraction is the one we are proudest of. Rather than teaching 'keep, change, flip' as a rule to memorise, it builds up from 'how many quarters in three' until the inversion is obvious.
By the end of this course, a learner working at the expected pace will be able to:
Oxford Mathematics Grade 6 is organised into 6 units covering 180 lessons in total, designed to run across 36 weeks at roughly 5 hours a week. The unit outline below shows 26 representative lessons.
Three full practice papers are spaced across the year under timed conditions, not to create pressure but because children who have never worked to a clock find their first real exam unnecessarily hard.
This course sits in the Grade 6 track and follows a oxford-aligned sequence. It suits families who want a complete, sequenced mathematics year rather than a set of loose practice activities, and it assumes no teaching experience โ every lesson includes a short method note for the adult. If your child is comfortably ahead or behind the intermediate level described here, use the placement check in lesson one and start at the recommended point instead of lesson one.
