Addition and subtraction to 100, place value and problem solving
The flagship Grade 1 maths course: 160 lessons taking your child from counting to confident two-digit calculation, with Oxford-style reasoning problems in every unit.
This is the course most Fayferz families start with. It covers a full academic year of Grade 1 mathematics — roughly UK Year 1 and US first grade — and it does so with a bias towards reasoning rather than repetition. Children are asked to explain, draw and justify, not just to compute.
The Oxford influence shows up most clearly in the problem-solving unit, where every question is presented in words first and the child's job is to turn it into a diagram. Parents consistently report that this is the part their children find hardest in week three and easiest by week twelve.
By the end of this course, a learner working at the expected pace will be able to:
Oxford Mathematics Grade 1 is organised into 6 units covering 160 lessons in total, designed to run across 36 weeks at roughly 4 hours a week. The unit outline below shows 29 representative lessons.
Each unit opens with a concrete lesson using objects you already own, moves to pictorial representation with bar models, and only then introduces the written algorithm. If a quiz score falls below 70%, the course suggests the two specific lessons to revisit rather than the whole unit.
This course sits in the Grade 1 track and follows a oxford-aligned sequence. It suits families who want a complete, sequenced mathematics year rather than a set of loose practice activities, and it assumes no teaching experience — every lesson includes a short method note for the adult. If your child is comfortably ahead or behind the beginner level described here, use the placement check in lesson one and start at the recommended point instead of lesson one.
