What your child will be able to do

  • Decode words containing the common digraphs (sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, oa)
  • Read the first 45 high-frequency 'tricky' words on sight
  • Read a short decodable book aloud with expression
  • Write a simple sentence with a capital letter and full stop
  • Retell a story in the correct order using their own words

Kindergarten is the year reading either clicks or quietly stalls. The difference is almost never ability โ€” it is whether a child gets enough practice at exactly the right level. That is why this course ships with thirty decodable books, each one restricted to the sounds already taught, so your child never has to guess.

The sequence follows the Oxford synthetic phonics progression, which means it dovetails cleanly with Oxford Reading Tree books if you already own them, and it maps onto UK Key Stage 1 phonics expectations and US kindergarten ELA standards alike.

What your child will be able to do

By the end of this course, a learner working at the expected pace will be able to:

  • Decode words containing the common digraphs (sh, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, oa)
  • Read the first 45 high-frequency 'tricky' words on sight
  • Read a short decodable book aloud with expression
  • Write a simple sentence with a capital letter and full stop
  • Retell a story in the correct order using their own words

How the course is structured

Oxford Reading & Phonics (KG) is organised into 5 units covering 96 lessons in total, designed to run across 32 weeks at roughly 3 hours a week. The unit outline below shows 20 representative lessons.

Consolidating single sounds

  • Speed-reading the first 26 sounds
  • CVC words: reading and spelling
  • Segmenting to spell: hearing every sound
  • Tricky words set 1: the, to, I, no, go

Consonant digraphs

  • sh and ch in real words
  • th (voiced and unvoiced)
  • ng and nk endings
  • Two consonants together: stop, flag, crisp

Vowel digraphs

  • ai, ee and the long vowel idea
  • oa, oo (both sounds)
  • ar, or, ur, ow, oi
  • Alternative spellings: ay, ea, igh

Fluency and comprehension

  • Reading in phrases, not word by word
  • Answering 'who, what, where' questions
  • Predicting what happens next
  • Reading our first chapter story

Writing sentences

  • Capital letters and full stops
  • Finger spaces and left-to-right
  • Writing about a picture
  • My first two-sentence story

How it is taught

Each week follows the same rhythm: teach a new sound, blend it in isolation, spell it from dictation, then read it inside a real story. Pronunciation is modelled in a neutral accent with the mouth on screen, which matters more than parents expect for sounds like 'th' and short 'u'.

What is included

  • 96 video lessons with modelled pronunciation
  • 30 printable decodable storybooks
  • Tricky-word flashcards and a fluency tracker
  • 24 auto-marked quizzes plus a mid-year reading check

Who this course suits

This course sits in the KG track and follows a oxford-aligned sequence. It suits families who want a complete, sequenced english year rather than a set of loose practice activities, and it assumes no teaching experience โ€” every lesson includes a short method note for the adult. If your child is comfortably ahead or behind the beginner level described here, use the placement check in lesson one and start at the recommended point instead of lesson one.
