Grade 1 Maths at Home: The Five Skills That Actually Matter

Grade 1 maths curricula list dozens of objectives. Five of them predict how the next four years will go. Here is how to teach each one, and how to tell when it has stuck.

A typical Grade 1 maths curriculum contains somewhere between forty and sixty stated objectives. Having watched a lot of children move from Grade 1 into Grade 4, five of them do almost all the predictive work. If these five are secure, later arithmetic is comfortable. If they are not, every subsequent year is harder than it needs to be.

1. Number bonds to 10, known instantly

Not worked out. Known.

The difference matters because working memory is finite. A child who has to count on fingers to find 7 + 3 has no capacity left for the two-step word problem the 7 + 3 was part of.

How to teach it: part-whole diagrams with physical counters first. Ten counters, split into two groups, over and over, naming both parts. Then the same thing drawn. Then the same thing written.

How to check it: ask eight bond questions in random order and time it. Under three seconds each, no fingers, no hesitation. If it takes longer, it is not yet automatic — keep doing four minutes a day.

2. Place value as tens and ones

A child who thinks 47 is "a four and a seven" will make errors in column addition for years and nobody will understand why.

How to teach it: base-ten blocks are worth the money, but bundled straws or elastic-banded lollipop sticks work identically. The essential activity is building the same number in more than one way — 47 as four tens and seven ones, and also as three tens and seventeen ones. That second representation is what makes borrowing make sense later.

How to check it: "Show me 62 with the blocks. Now show me 62 a different way." If they cannot, place value is not secure yet.

3. Bridging through ten

Adding 8 + 5 by going 8 → 10 → 13. This is the strategy that converts known bonds into fast mental arithmetic across the whole number range.

How to teach it: use a ten-frame. Fill it to ten first, visibly, then add what remains. Say it out loud every time: "Eight needs two more to make ten. Five is two and three. Ten and three is thirteen."

How to check it: ask 9 + 6 and listen to how they get there. Counting up one by one means the strategy has not landed.

4. Turning a word problem into a picture

The bar model. A child who can draw the problem can nearly always solve it; a child who cannot draw it is guessing at which operation to use.

How to teach it: for a full term, ban answers. The task is only to draw the bar model — two parts and a whole, or a comparison — and say what is missing. Solving comes afterwards and turns out to be the easy part.

How to check it: give a two-step problem and ask for the drawing, not the answer.

5. Estimating before calculating

The habit of writing an approximate answer first. It costs five seconds and catches most place-value errors.

How to teach it: every written calculation gets a one-line estimate above it. 38 + 27 → "about 40 + 30 = 70". Then calculate. Then compare. When the answer is 605 instead of 65, the child notices themselves.

How to check it: deliberately make an error in your own working on the whiteboard and see whether they catch it.

What matters less than you think

  • Telling the time. Useful, but it predicts nothing. It will land eventually.
  • Naming 3D shapes. Vocabulary, not mathematics.
  • Writing numbers neatly. Worth encouraging, not worth a battle.
  • Speed at written column addition. Accuracy first. Speed arrives on its own.

A four-minute daily routine that covers three of the five

  1. Minute 1: eight number bond questions, timed.
  2. Minute 2: four bridging-through-ten questions out loud.
  3. Minutes 3–4: one word problem, drawn as a bar model, not solved.

Do this before the main lesson, every day, for a year. It is the highest-return four minutes in primary maths.

The goal of Grade 1 maths is not coverage. It is automaticity in a small number of things, so that Grade 2 can be about thinking rather than counting.
